1996 was the final year for the C4 Corvette, and Chevrolet ended the run with a bang by offering the Z15 Collector Edition and the stronger LT4 engine.  This car combines both those desirable options and many other features into a great performing sports car with only 39k miles.  It also comes with many extras for the next owner.  And its price point makes it one of the easiest ways to get into a collectible Corvette that offers far more performance than most people realize.

This beautiful example has a spotless Autocheck report and has been with the same owner in Kentucky since 2010 with only 3k miles since.  Silver Sebring metallic paint and painted aluminum wheels were standard on all Collector Edition cars.  While this example wears chrome 5-spoke wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, the original wheels with their own set of Goodyears are included.  Collector Edition badging is present on the hood, above the fender vents, and on the gas cap cover.

The heart of this Corvette is the optional LT4 engine.  Note this is the same engine used in the Grand Sport with the same red accents and Grand Sport script.  It provides a 10% power increase over the standard LT1, bumping output to 330hp along with a higher redline of 6,300 rpm.  This powerplant is backed by the excellent ZF 6-speed manual transmission (a requirement for the LT4 option) which is followed by a 3.45 rear end.  The FE1 suspension was softened slightly for 1996 to provide a ride you can live with every day.  This Corvette also has the J55 high performance brake package with its black calipers and silver script.

The black leather interior was the pinnacle of C4 design.  The Collector Edition provides dual sport leather seats with special red embroidery.  Each is power with air adjustments for upper/middle/lower back and side bolsters.  The 1996 dash is cleaned up significantly over previous C4 models, replacing many of the unnatural electronic indicators with traditional style gauges.  A favorite option is the 6-speaker Delco-Bose Gold series audio system which is one of the best sounding units ever put in a Corvette.  Other options include automatic climate control, heated mirrors, and a power antenna.  This example also has rocker sill protectors to protect the carpet while getting in and out.  Finally, it comes with two keyfobs, owner manuals, service manuals, maintenance records, and unused Collector Edition mats.

The C4 Corvette can represent a fantastic deal in the Corvette market.  Chevrolet took an extra year of development for this platform (entirely skipping the 1983 model year) and it represented the first significant mechanical redesign in 20 years.  While the early cars had dubious electronics and the C3 205hp Cross Fire engine and T10 4-speed, things were much advanced by the final year of production.  Don’t settle for an older, poorly kept offering with high miles and an inferior drivetrain.  As this car shows, you can buy the best of the breed for a lot less money than you’d think.
